Team of the Week - Rubber Ducks

March 4, 2021 - 5 years ago

The Rubber Ducks are our team of the week!

They started playing together as individuals’ way back when and clicked from the beginning. Even when no one knew each other they were able to connect with one another through basketball and have been signing back up as a team for a few seasons now.

Initially they played a couple of seasons in our Wednesday night basketball competition but transitioned to Tuesday when it started up last Spring and haven’t looked back. The first season they played, they won the fun points and they were pretty stocked!

The team consists of Brandon (the captain) Mitch, Yang, Emma, Kelly, Grace and Jye. They are always super friendly and their skills on the basketball court are truly inspiring. They are a great bunch of people and like celebrating their wins and losses at the Ori Hotel over pizza. Mitch and Emma have also signed up separately in the Touch Football competition and it’s great to see a bit of rivalry on the touch field between them.

Congrats team for being such great people on and off the court!

Team of the Week - Average Joes

February 25, 2021 - 5 years ago

The Average Joes

What about them is worth writing about and honouring them with Team Of The Week if they are just average!!?

Well, they are pretty average on the field and they know it, and they have a good laugh about it, but what isn’t average about them is that they are one of the most fun teams across all our leagues. They are a very funny crew, they have won the Fun Point prize at least once and they make their opposition laugh every single game no matter what the sport is. The team is also well known for always putting in 100% effort to the dress up weeks.

These guys all started out as individuals back at the beginning of 2020 (before the pandemic), they didn’t know each other but it was obvious after their first game they were destined to be a team together.

The team consists of many personalities Bryce is the silent assassin, always smiling even when he is in the midst of tackling someone in soccer and their captain Jill is the loudest on the team, whether it’s encouraging her team mates or screaming because the ball has come near her. Kate and Amber bring a solid skillset to the team with their all-round ability to play every single sport and Matthew, Chris and Stella are the constant members of the team, always turning up and giving the team that extra push when they need it on the field. Andy is the player in the team that will turn up and watch from the sidelines even when his injured and Jovana is so genuine always up for a chat and makes time to talk to everyone and anyone.

To all of the Average Joes – Jill, Andy, Kate, Amber, Bryce, Matthew, Chris, Stella and Jovana – thank you for making Thursday nights so fun for your Event Host, Riley and your opposition.

MEET THE TEAM - Riley

September 10, 2020 - 5 years ago

Riley has only recently started hosting with us this season. She has been a great addition to the team, with her laid back personality and love of sport. Whilst balancing her teaching studies and working she has also started playing AFL this season for Newcastle City and from all reports is absolutely killing it!! In between her crazy schedule she also fits in a sneaky fix of the show SUITS, she is a big fan of the show, but who isn’t amirigt? We sat down with her to find out more about what Riley does to keep busy and how nerdy she really is.

  1. What is the coolest thing about working with Urban Rec? I love meeting new people and being able to have fun whilst playing sport and listening to music!
  2. How did you get involved with Urban Rec? My friend Molly usually hosts for Urban Rec but she went on her teaching internship this term and asked if I’d be keen to get involved and take over from her. I was in as soon as she asked pretty much!
  3. What is your favourite sport? Tough one. I have played pretty much every sport at some stage of my life, but mostly netball, soccer, water polo and tennis at varying representative levels and I love them all HEAPS. But I’ve just started playing AFL this year and I’m really enjoying it, so maybe that right now!
  4. What do you do when you are not event hosting? Studying a Bach. of Secondary Education majoring in PDHPE and minoring in Business Studies. Otherwise I’m hanging out with friends, family and my boyfriend at the beach (summer) or the snow (winter) getting up to some sort of mischief.
  5. What is the nerdiest thing you do in your free time? I love to read if I have a good book and I’m on a holiday. Other than that, I’m not too sure. Does shopping count?
  6. What is your go-to Karaoke song? People always ask me this and I never have an answer, very dependent on my mood haha. But definitely prefer some old school rock or hip-hop for my karaoke music.
  7. Favourite TV Show? Suits.
  8. Name one celebrity dead/alive that you would like to have dinner with? A$AP Rocky.
  9. What are five things you would take with you during the Zombie apocalypse? Food, water, running shoes, phone and headphones.

Would you rather…

  1. Winter or Summer? Summer
  2. Cats or Dog? Dog
  3. Have no eyebrows or only one eyebrow? No eyebrows
  4. Talk to animals or speak all foreign languages Speak all foreign languages
  5. Be invisible or Fly? Fly
  6. Have feet that never stopped growing or hands that never stop growing? Feet
  7. Only be able to jump everywhere you go or only be able to walk on your hands? Jump everywhere I go
