Urban Rec - Newcastle's Sport and Social Club

King/Queen of the Flag Gridiron Field

February 24, 2020 - one year ago

The Weather Gods blessed us with a fabulous evening on Wednesday night, perfect conditions for the first ever night of Flag Football in Newcastle. With a stack of newbies showing up it was so good to see new faces to Urban Rec as well as a bunch of veterans.

There are a few things we are doing differently this competition. It is a 6 week competition so instead of the usual 10 weeks we run, we are changing it up so that players are scored on their participation, win and MVP status. The players at the end of the season with the highest MVP points will win the prizes.

The scores for the first round are listed below. Here is how it works..

1 point = participation

1 point = winning team

2 points = voted MVP by opposition team

We will post updated scores after next weeks game but for the last 4 weeks of the competition we will keep it a secret so it’s a nice surprise at the end. Honestly, who doesn’t love surprises!?

WEEK 2, Wednesday march 4

Week 2 of Flag Gridiron involved teams being seperated into groups depending on their Birth Month. That meant players were able to play against their mates. Some players were absolutely loving the fact they could burn their friends with a sideline dash and touch down. It’s creating a very social vibe down at Waratah Park of a Wednesday evening with many of them heading to the Royal Inn Hotel for a beverage and debrief after the game.

Here are the scores for this week. We won’t be posting any scores after this week, so it is your last chance to get a glimpse of where everyone is at.

Individual Teams Looking for Players!

January 6, 2020 - one year ago

Individual’s are welcome!

New to Newcastle or want to play social sport but don’t have enough mates to create a team?

That is what Urban Rec is here for! We are your social sport gurus with the purpose of getting people out and about, playing sport and having a laugh doing it. With the perfect mix of sport and social activities, Urban Rec is ideal for an individual looking to showcase their sporting prowess but make friends doing so.

You can sign up as an individual and we will place you in a team with other like-minded people! The team will be full of other fun loving, social peeps looking to play sport, who just want to run around and then head to the pub afterwards.

On the first night you’ll just need to introduce yourself to your Event Host (you’ll get emailed closer to the league start date who they are). The EH will introduce you to other members in your team. After that point, you will nominate a captain and operate like a normal team... Your captain will take responsibility of making sure the team has enough players each week.

If you are trying to register with a friend, make sure you two jump on at the same time to guarantee you get on the same team.

We have a whole heap of Individual teams starting in Januray. Be sure to register ASAP as spaces in each team are limited and filling fast!

10 reasons to play with Urban Rec

September 20, 2019 - one year ago

  1. Making NEW friends! As we get older, it gets harder to make new friends and meet people outside of technology and the workplace. Sign up to any individual team in any of our leagues and you will be placed into a team of other individuals who are looking to stay fit and be social.
  2. Variety! Whether you love the standard sports of basketball and soccer or are looking to try new sports like dodgeball and Aussie Rules 7s, we have a range of sports to suit each person. We have launched a heap of sports this spring including Multisport, Dodgeball, Soccer, Aussie Rules, Backyard Cricket, Softball, Flag Gridiron and Basketball. Whatever you are interested in… we got you covered!
  3. Health and Fitness! You know that thing doctors are always going on about…. Get your cardio and fitness kick without the tedious gym, treadmills and evening runs. You’ll be surprised at how much you are sweating when you come off the field – all while having a laugh!
  4. No Dickheads! Playing sport in Australia traditionally is all about getting that win. Teams still do win and lose at the end of the night, BUT, we have a strong no dickheads policy. We strongly believe that everyone should be able to play sport in a supportive and friendly environment. Everyone plays to have fun, winning comes second.
  5. Clubhouses. Each of our leagues is associated with a local pub. Each week the pub gives away vouchers to enjoy after your game with your team. Some of these include schooner vouchers, jug vouchers and pizza vouchers. We have organized this with the clubhouses to give your team an incentive to go to the pub and chat after your game. Is there a better reason to go than freebies?? We think not.
  6. Fun Points. We want to make sure our leagues are free of aggressive and rude peeps so each week your team will score your opposition out of 5 for how fun they were to play against. Were they fair? Were they good sports? Did they invite you to the pub afterwards? The team with the highest fun points at the end of the season gets a $100 voucher from the clubhouse.
  7. End of season parties and tournaments. Playing sport is fun but so is socialising - that’s why we’ve mixed them together. In some leagues we offer end of season tournaments – these are FREE for teams who have registered and often include a dress up theme and giveaways! Trust us – it’s often the crowd favourite of the season.
  8. Individual Registration. This is what we do best. Getting 6 of your mates together to commit is hard work and then organising the cashola is difficult and sometimes awkward. We do all the hard work for you, all you need to do is pay for your own registration and then we add you to a team of other individuals who are looking to play in that league as well. We make sure the team has a captain and enough people in the squad so your team doesn’t have to forfeit or stress about players. Individual registration is also great if you are new to Newcastle and want to play solo or with 1-2 mates.
  9. Portal access – Once you become a member of Urban Rec and sign up to a league you will have all the information at your fingertips. This includes the schedule for the comp, ladders and contact details.
  10.  Personable Staff- Referees are a thing of the past and we pride ourselves on not having referees, we have amazing EVENT HOSTS instead. Event Hosts are there to make sure everyone knows the rules of the sport, is having a good time and are there to answer any questions players might have. Our leagues are SOCIAL so you don’t need a referee making every call on the field – there’s a strong honesty policy too, with the event host there to make the hard calls if you can’t agree. Each league also has a league manager dedicated to that particular sport.

Free Learn and Play Events

September 9, 2019 - one year ago

We’re launching a whole heap of new sports in Spring, ones which we have never played before so we are giving Novacastrians an opportunity to check them out for FREE before you sign up to the competition. Trust us, you’ll be hooked.

The learn and play events are a great way to learn the skills involved in the sport and also meet our Event Hosts and other members who are thinking of signing up. On the night of the learn and play events you can expect to go through a few drills and skills for the sport and then be placed into a team to play a very social round robin competition. Once the night is over we also like to head to one of our clubhouses afterwards where we can share a drink with our new friends.

What Learn and Play events are on??

Aussie Rules – Wed 25th Sept @ Waratah Park

Flag Gridiron – Wed 25th Sept @ Waratah Park

Backyard Cricket – Fri 27th Sept @ Learmonth Park

Beach Volleyball – Sun 29th Sept @ Nobby’s Beach

Dodgeball – Tues 1st Oct @ Revolution Sports Park

There are limited tickets available for each event so grab a ticket for you and your mate now before they are all gone.

At Urban Rec we have a strict ‘No Dickhead Policy’. Social sport is meant to be friendly and fun and somewhere you can go after you’ve finished work for the day to get in a cardio session without having to deal with more drama.

We all know that people have different skill levels when it comes to sport, some are amazing and have a natural flair with the ball or bat whilst some have never played before and are still learning the basics – and THAT IS OK! We strive to provide an environment for all our members where you can play in our league and be the MVP or you can play in our league and be BIP (Best in the Pub), but still have a laugh. We don’t care what level of skill you are as long as you turn up with the right attitude.

For those new to Urban Rec – if you’re not sure if you are a dick when you play social sport- here are a few hints on how to check.

  1. If your teams are winning the game by a lot, this is NOT the time to pull out your hero moves and keep scoring. The opposition will think you are a show-off and odds on most of the time your team will as well.
  2. If you don’t shake the oppositions hand at the end of the game, you’re a dickhead.
  3. Talking back, or questioning our Event Hosts during the game play…. is a dickhead move.
  4. If you see a beginner player, but use this as a chance to show off your skills, you’re in dickhead territory.
  5. If you hurt someone even if it was by accident, do as your Mum taught you, say Sorry. Don’t be a dickhead.

If in doubt – just remember that we are just trying to have fun!
