TOUCH DOWN!!
May 19, 2019 - 5 years ago
The Knights might be on the verge of great things this season (fingers crossed) but just in case we are let down, we have got the next best thing... Winning your Flag Gridiron competition!! Flag Gridiron has arrived in Newcastle and we want to help you make the switch from one football code to another.
No experience is necessary to play this game, if you like American Football, enjoy watching the Superbowl or College Football then this is the game for you. A fun, laid back version of Gridiron without the big hits and tight pants.
Our super friendly Event Host goes through all the rules with each team on the first week and continues to coach players on the rules throughout the season. We want to make sure everyone is welcome and encouraged to play this sport so we make it simple for everyone, whether you’re an expert or never played before.
We are holding a FREE Learn and Play event Monday June 3rd where you can bring a mate and play Gridiron for free. It is a great way to meet new people, learn the sport and get involved with Urban Rec. Check out the Social Events Page to grab a ticket to this amazing event!
If you are concerned about what the positions are in Gridiron- don't stress it- we got you covered! Check out our handbook below with all the lingo you need to know before you rock up in June.
THE POSITIONS- CONFUSING BUT SOUND SUPER COOL!
Quarterback (QB): Needs to know how to fang’ it long. Likes the spotlight a little more than most, but needs the trust of his teams. Secretly hates cardio but has a good arm.
Running Back (RB): Fast and elusive, and ready for a handoff from the QB when the Defence is on the back foot. Secretly loves running and cardio.
Wide Receiver (WR): Need to have the speed to beat the coverage or the flight to grab the ball in traffic. Loves diving and isn’t afraid to eat some dirt.
Blitzers: Their job is to hone QB like a heat seeking missile and shut down the play before it begins. Terrifying on the field, and good at parties off.
Defensive Backs (DB): Unsung heroes of the field, the legion of boom needs to be ready for an arial attack. The interception is the slam dunk of gridiron, and you are LeBron baby. Plus you get to make a new celebration aftr every play, so there is that too.
THE LINGOOOOOO
FOURTH AND LONG
Instead of the six tackles you get in regular touch footy, each time a team receives possession they have 4 attempts (downs) to move the football past halfway, and then receive a new set of four to make it to the end zone for a touch down!
BREAKS BETWEEN PLAYS
After each play, teams get 20 seconds to huddle up and plan for the next one. This allows team to nut out their tactis for the next play, promotes team unity and respect amonget all team mates. Most importantly allows teams to catch their breath they have likely been at the pub before the game and are puffing like crazy.
FORWARD PASSES
Each play, the QB of the attacking team can make one forward pass to any of his/her players.
TOUCH DOWN
Catch the ball, or run it into the endzone, and your team scores 6 points and a shot at more. The confetti rains down, we dunp Gatorade on the winners and we we all go to the pub!
